Een grote hoeveelheid in beslag genomen Bitcoins (BTC<\/a>) is op mysterieuze wijze verdwenen bij het Openbaar Ministerie in Zuid-Korea. De waarde loopt op tot tientallen miljoenen dollars. Een interne controle bracht het incident aan het licht. Volgens lokale media zou een phishingaanval aan de basis van de diefstal liggen.<\/p>\n

Bitcoins verdwenen door fatale fout<\/h2>\n

Het Zuid-Koreaanse medium Yonhap News TV bracht<\/a> het nieuws donderdag naar buiten. Tijdens een standaardcontrole ontdekte het Openbaar Ministerie in Gwangju dat er voor 70 miljard won aan Bitcoin ontbrak, omgerekend zo\u2019n 47,7 miljoen dollar.<\/p>\n

De verklaring luidt dat een medewerker per ongeluk een frauduleuze website bezocht. Daardoor kregen kwaadwillenden toegang tot de interne systemen van het OM. Via die weg konden zij vermoedelijk de in beslag genomen crypto\u2019s buitmaken. Een dure les voor de betrokken medewerker.<\/p>\n

Waar de verdwenen Bitcoins zich bevinden is vooralsnog onbekend. Omdat het onderzoek nog loopt, doet het Openbaar Ministerie geen verdere mededelingen. Ook het exacte moment van de diefstal is nog niet vastgesteld.<\/p>\n

Beveiliging van crypto blijft zwakke plek<\/h2>\n

Door de opkomst van cryptocurrencies stijgt ook het aantal inbeslagnames van digitale bezittingen. Zodra autoriteiten deze activa bemachtigen, worden ze opgeslagen in wallets. Maar de beveiliging daarvan blijkt vaak ondermaats.<\/p>\n

Dat juist een overheidsinstantie ten prooi valt aan phishing, toont aan dat ook offici\u00eble instanties kwetsbaar zijn voor digitale oplichting.<\/p>\n

Scams nemen af, maar worden slimmer<\/h2>\n

Hoewel crypto-scams nog altijd miljoenen opleveren voor criminelen, lijkt het tij te keren. Volgens de website Scam Sniffer<\/a> daalden de totale verliezen in 2025 met maar liefst drie\u00ebntachtig procent, tot een bedrag van 84 miljoen dollar.<\/p>\n

Toch worden oplichters steeds inventiever. Zo kwamen eerder al phishingmails<\/a> aan het licht die identiek leken aan offici\u00eble rechtbankdocumenten, bedoeld om slachtoffers om de tuin te leiden.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
